There
is a lot to see and do in a visit to the Chatham Historic Dockyard and places
worth a visit include the Ropery which was built in 1785 and where ropes were
made to supply the Navy.
The building is 1,140 feet long and the ground floor is still in use; visitors
can see ropes still being made today on machinery installed in 1806. The covered
slipways built to allow work to be carried out without worrying about the
weather are also worth a visit as are the many listed buildings which give a
picture of life at the dockyard in years gone by. There is a fine display of the
history of wooden warships. The museum in the dockyard charts the 400 year
history of the place and is fascinating. |

A
trip out on the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway is always good fun whether
you’re grown up or not. The railway uses one third full size steam and diesel
locomotives and pulls both closed and open coaches on a journey across the
Romney Marsh.
After
being brought up on Thomas the Tank Engine children are enthralled by these
small steam engines and the parents also have more fun than they thought they
might. There is something special about steam engines and for many children and
even adults it would be their first sight of steam engine.
The
trains run for more than 13 miles between Hythe and Dungeness with stops at,
Dymchurch, St Mary’s Bay, New Romney and Romney Sands. New Romney is the biggest
and main station and features a toy and model museum that also charts the
creation and use of the railway over the years. |

Skiing is not something you would normally associate
with Strood, however at The Snow Park the staff have been gradually ringing the
changes during the winter months over the past few years. The successful plant
hire company, H E Services, saw the opportunity for themed adventure parks for
families, originally creating Diggerland.
With this project they capitalised on the
fascination all ages have for mechanical diggers. The attractions include rides,
drives and static displays, employing a variety of construction vehicles such as
JCB's, dumper trucks, as well as mini and giant diggers. Safety is a natural
concern and fully trained instructors carry out all rides under strict
supervision.
